A smarter way to sentence humans

If we set out to formulate a senseless sentencing scheme, it would be difficult to devise one that resulted in a number that exceeded by a more than 100 years the length of time that any human being has ever lived.

Miguel Villanueva is 31 years old. In 2014, he fired a gun at CHP and Bakersfield Police Department officers during a four-hour standoff. Subsequently, Mr. Villanueva was convicted of 22 felonies, including multiple counts of attempted murder and assault with a gun on a police officer. Earlier this month, he was sentenced to 255 years and four months in prison. One can only imagine how much time he might have received if someone had actually been injured.
