Bill would add caste bias protection to state civil rights law

Several recent lawsuits have centered on alleged mistreatment of members of the so-called Dalit or “untouchable” caste in Silicon Valley. But the Unruh Civil Rights Act doesn’t mention caste. SB 403 would add the term to a list of protected characteristics under the 1959 law.

State civil rights law would explicitly include caste discrimination under a bill passed by the California Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.
