Newsom and Legislature reach deal to fund public defender pilot program

Funding for the program, which assists individuals seeking resentencing, had been at risk of being cut.

Gov. Gavin Newsom and the state Legislature reached a deal to reinstate funding for a pilot program that provides public defenders for incarcerated individuals seeking resentencing and for immigrants fighting illegal reentry charges.
