Quickly rising to the upper echelons of management, Jerry L. Marks was named partner-in-charge of Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe's Los Angeles office after only four years at the firm.
Mark, 39, replaces Robert Hubbell, who in March was named firmwide managing partner, a newly created position at San Francisco-based Heller Ehrman.
"Jerry is a very talented lawyer and has demonstrated some strong management skills and people skills, which is the most important part of his job," firm Chairman Barry Levin says. "We felt very confident that he would do this job well."
Marks, a securities and accountants' liability lawyer, joined Heller Ehrman as partner in 1998 after seven years at the Los Angeles office of New York's Shearman & Sterling. Securities and antitrust litigation partner Darryl Snider and three associates joined him in the move.
"Jerry is a very smart, aggressive young lawyer who has risen rapidly because he works hard, has strong leadership skills and works well with clients and people," Snider says. "He has a good grasp on the practice of law and its economics."
Marks' clients include investment firm Credit Suisse First Boston Corp. and accounting firms Deloitte & Touche, KPMG and Ernst & Young.
For three years, Marks has served as the assignments partner in Los Angeles, helping to control work flow and work assignments. His transition to the position of managing partner is a natural progression, according to Hubbell.
Hubbell added 10 attorneys to the Los Angeles office during his two-year stint as managing partner of the 62-attorney Los Angeles office. Mark intends to continue to add to the firm's ranks.
"Heller Ehrman has had a great several years as a firm and an excellent year this year," Marks says. "And we are going to strategically continue to grow this office."
Heller Ehrman employs 600 attorneys in 13 international offices, including Menlo Park and San Diego.
