Making the move 120 miles south, white-collar criminal defense lawyer Yvonne Dutton has joined Allen Matkins Leck Gamble & Mallory in San Diego from Munger, Tolles & Olson in Los Angeles.
Dutton joined Allen Matkins as special counsel on July 16.
"We are really trying to grow the practice," Dutton says of Los Angeles-based Allen Matkins, which is widely known for its real estate and business practices but is expanding into white-collar crime work.
Brian Leck, firmwide managing partner, agrees.
"Our litigation practice continues to grow, and with Yvonne's expertise in white-collar crime, we are tapping into an area that will augment this growth," Leck says.
Allen Matkins has 210 attorneys, of which 50 are litigators, spread across five California offices. The San Diego office has 35 attorneys.
Dutton's career as a lawyer started on the stage. A performer on Broadway in the early 1980s, she appeared in musicals such as "42nd Street," "Sugar Babies" and "Singin' in the Rain."
In 1985, she left Broadway to enroll in undergraduate courses at Columbia University. She went on to receive her law degree from the university in 1991.
After a brief stint with New York's Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, Dutton served as an assistant U.S. attorney in New York, where she prosecuted narcotics, organized crime and fraud cases.
She moved to San Diego in 1998 and joined Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. When that office closed in summer 2000, Dutton joined Munger Tolles in Los Angeles.
Dutton quickly grew tired of traveling between residences in Los Angeles and San Diego, where her husband continued to live.
"To have no community was not really what I wanted," she says.
