Edwards to Head Family Law Group

SAN FRANCISCO - Santa Clara Superior Court Judge Leonard P. Edwards, nationally recognized for his work addressing juvenile and family violence, has been selected to be president of National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the council announced Wednesday.

        SAN FRANCISCO - Santa Clara Superior Court Judge Leonard P. Edwards, nationally recognized for his work addressing juvenile and family violence, has been selected to be president of National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the council announced Wednesday.
        Currently the supervising judge of Santa Clara County's Juvenile Dependency Court, Edwards was instrumental in establishing one of the first Family Drug Courts in the country and has served as the lead judge for the San Jose Victims Act Model Court since 1997.
        He also co-founded Santa Clara County's Domestic Violence Council and is the former chairman of the Family Violence State-of-the-Art Court Programs Committee. Edwards founded the Juvenile Court Judges of California and is a member of the state Judicial Council, which oversees the state court system.
        Additionally, he has taught juvenile and family law at the University of Santa Clara Law School, Stanford Law School and California Judicial College. Edwards has written a number of articles and books, including "Child Abuse and the Legal System."
        Appointed to the bench in 1980, he received his law degree from the University of Chicago. Prior to serving on the bench, Edwards was an attorney and a deputy public defender in San Jose.
        Based in Reno, Nev., the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges is the nation's oldest and largest judicial membership organization. Founded in 1937, it addresses juvenile and family law and policy development pertaining to those issues.
