SAN DIEGO - Confident of his confirmation by the U.S. Senate, Attorney General John Ashcroft has appointed Judge Kevin V. Ryan as the interim U.S. attorney for Northern California.
Ryan was sworn in Tuesday night by Chief Judge Marilyn Hall Patel during the 9th Circuit Judicial Conference and assumed his duties immediately.
Ryan, a San Francisco Superior Court judge, has been nominated by President Bush and is expected to be confirmed by the Senate without opposition. The action allows Ryan to start running the office until the Senate actually votes on his nomination.
Ryan would succeed Robert Mueller, who left to become director of the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Shapiro, who has been interim U.S. attorney since shortly after Mueller's departure last year, has returned to his previous position.
