Funsten, a corporate lawyer focusing on life sciences companies, joined the firm as a partner in Newport Beach Monday. He worked as an associate at the firm from 1987 to 1993, when he left to become vice president and general counsel of Claremont's Chiron Vision Corp. After four years in that position, Funsten joined Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. in Corona, where he served as senior vice president and general counsel.
Funsten represents medical device, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in transactional work and counsels clients on intellectual property and litigation strategies. He said he rejoined Stradling Yocca because of the long-term commitment the firm has made to the life sciences area.
"It's exciting, because it's a significant growth industry here on the West Coast," Funsten, 42, said.
The addition is part of the firm's plan to increase the size of its life sciences department, which has a total of 15 attorneys.
"We are now re-energizing our focus on life sciences to build the kind of practice we have in Orange County up and down the West Coast," Lawrence B. Cohn, chair of Stradling Yocca's life sciences practice, said.
Stradling Yocca has 100 lawyers and offices in Newport Beach, Santa Barbara and San Francisco.
