Luanne Sacks, an antitrust and complex litigation partner with Oakland's Crosby Heafey Roach & May, has joined Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich in San Francisco.
Sacks is the sixth partner to leave Crosby Heafey in recent months. The others are Duffy Carolan, William Wick, Michael Delehunt, Joan Haratani and Margaret Roisman.
Sacks, who joined Crosby Heafey in 1998, says the departures were not part of any larger pattern of defections at Crosby Heafey.
"When you talk about an economy like this, you're going to see people move more frequently," she says.
Jack Nelson, Crosby Heafey's chief of operations, says that the number of defections is not unusual for a firm with 240 lawyers.
"The number is not large by any stretch of the imagination," he says.
Sacks says joining Gray Cary "was too fabulous an opportunity to pass up."
She moved to Gray Cary because it has a more national practice than Crosby Heafey and "a critical mass" of antitrust lawyers. In addition, she says, she received a very generous compensation package.
Gray Cary's David Gross says Sacks is a welcome addition to the firm's 30-lawyer antitrust practice group.
"We're very excited to have her," he says.
Gross, the co-chair of the firm's business and technology litigation group, says Gray Cary continues to seek lawyers for its new San Francisco office, which has 35 lawyers. He says the office, which opened in April, can grow to as many as 80 lawyers.
Palo Alto-based Gray Cary has 480 lawyers in seven offices.
