Several California law firms have made a good impression on company directors, but New York firms have made an even better one. Los Angeles firms Latham & Watkins, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher and O'Melveny & Myers, along with Palo Alto's Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, cracked the list of the Top 21 law firms in America published by Corporate Board Member magazine.
In order to rank the firms, the publication surveyed thousands of directors and general counsel of publicly held companies traded on the New York and American stock exchanges and the Nasdaq market.
New York firms dominated the list, including each of the top five spots: Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, Cravath Swaine & Moore, Sullivan & Cromwell, Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz, and Davis Polk & Wardwell.
In addition, the publication ranked the top law firms in 50 metropolitan areas.
In San Francisco, the top five are Wilson Sonsini, Brobeck Phleger & Harrison, Cooley Godward, Morrison & Foerster and Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe.
In Los Angeles, the group of five consists of Gibson Dunn, O'Melveny & Myers, Latham & Watkins, Munger Tolles & Olson and Skadden Arps.
And the top five San Diego firms are Latham & Watkins, Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich, Brobeck Phleger, Luce Forward Hamilton & Scripps and Cooley Godward.
