Bruce Boulware is scheduled join the firm in early September as chief operating officer. He succeeds Charles Wharton, who served as the firm's executive director for 16 years and who retired earlier this year.
O'Melveny & Myers is one of many law firms that have changed the title of executive director to chief operating officer.
"Most firms that have done that are expanding the role of that position somewhat," law firm consultant Peter Zeughauser notes.
And Bob Willett, vice chair of O'Melveny & Myers, says that the new title signals a broader scope of responsibilities.
"There's more emphasis on strategic planning and implementation as well as practice growth and business development," Willett says.
Boulware, who is not an attorney, will belong to O'Melveny & Myers' seven-member senior management team.
For the past five years, Boulware served as chief operating officer at San Francisco-based Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe.
"He's one of the well-known firm administrative leaders in the country," Willett says of Boulware. "We feel very fortunate to have been able to hire him to replace Charles, who was also a superior individual.
"He brings over 20 years of law firm administrative experience with him. But he also has experience and a keen interest in helping the firm define and execute our strategic plan to help grow our practice areas and to help develop new areas of business, in addition to being a superior administrator running the non-lawyer side of the business."
Boulware was traveling and could not be reached for comment by press time.
O'Melveny & Myers has 800 lawyers in 13 offices worldwide.
