Nearly a year after instituting one of the largest layoffs in California law firm history, Cooley Godward has implemented another, but much smaller, work-force reduction.
On June 11, the Palo Alto-based firm trimmed three associates and five staff members from its Kirkland, Wash, office.
Cooley first laid off lawyers in August, when it let go 85 associates and 50 staff members.
The most recent cuts, says chief operating officer Mark Pitchford, were not a part of any larger layoff.
Christopher Wright, the managing partner of the Kirkland office, says Cooley has seen a rebound in work in all its offices except Kirkland.
"The region has just been hit harder," Wright says.
Cooley opened its Kirkland office in 1998. At its high point a year ago, it had 19 lawyers. Now, seven lawyers practice in Washington. They focus almost entirely on emerging companies, venture capital and public offerings.
Firmwide, Cooley has 600 lawyers in seven offices.
