Hess, 38, said she would take her clients to Fenwick & West, including software companies Doongo.com Inc., Tavant Technologies Inc. and StreamTheory Inc.
She also has handled stock financing for investment bank Deutsche Bank Alex.Brown.
Hess said she was attracted to Fenwick & West's larger, more established technology client list.
"Perkins [Coie] is relatively new in the Bay Area, so it's not going to have the same kind of depth of practice areas for representing technology clients," she said.
Gordon Davidson, chairman of Fenwick & West, said the firm had been trying to recruit Hess for a year. Hess had impressed Fenwick attorneys when she worked with them representing a company in a merger, he said.
"It's our strategy during these times, when there's some consolidation, to broaden and deepen our attorney resources for the eventual rebound of the economy," Davidson said.
Ed Wes, managing partner of Perkins Coie's Bay Area offices, could not be reached for comment Thursday.
