Dr. Robert Briner, 72, has had an incredible career in law and international dispute resolution, and he doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
The Swiss-born Briner has been chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce's International Court of Arbitration for six years.
He has a law degree from the University of Zurich, is admitted to the bars of Zurich, Geneva and Fribourg in Switzerland, and is a partner with Geneva's Lenz & Staehelin. Briner lives in Geneva most of the year, although he travels worldwide on business.
Among his numerous professional associations, Briner is the former president of the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal and is a member of the Claims Resolution Tribunal for Dormant Accounts in Switzerland, which deals with Holocaust claims.
He also has served on the International Council for Arbitration of Sport as a judge on the Olympic Committee on Sport.
Briner speaks English, German and French fluently. His Canadian-born wife speaks nine languages.
Briner's youthful attitude belies his age, perhaps because he works so hard and also exercises regularly. An International Chamber of Commerce colleague, Lorraine M. Brennan, described Briner's determination and energy:
"While on a business trip, we took a brisk walk across all of Boston to find an obscure Swedish newspaper," she recalled. "I knew they wouldn't have it, even in Cambridge. Still it was quite a trek across town."
