He replaces Bruce Schwab, who helped build the group to 30 lawyers over the past 29 years.
Steiner, 48, has spent 18 years in trademark and copyright law and is an alum of the San Francisco city attorney's office, where he was a deputy. He started at Townsend and Townsend in 1983.
Townsend and Townsend has 149 lawyers in San Francisco, Palo Alto, Walnut Creek, Denver and Seattle. In addition to intellectual property, the firm specializes in complex commercial litigation and antitrust law.
