Emily E. Vasquez of Sacramento's Kronick Moskovitz Tiedemann & Girard has received the Humanitarian of the Year award from the Sacramento County Bar Association. Vasquez received the award on May 1.
The employment law litigator was honored for her involvement in the Health Education Council, an organization that provides health education programs to children and adults in low-income communities.
She has served on the council's board of directors for the past five years, working to implement, among other things, tobacco prevention and breast-cancer detection programs.
"As a litigation attorney with a full-time job and two young children, I often get asked why I perform community service," she says. "I believe that as lawyers we should use our education and skills to better society."
For Vasquez, who worked alongside her parents in a migrant labor camp as a child, it was programs like Health Education Council that helped her and her family improve their lives. Serving on the council's board is her way of giving back to the community, she says.
