Stephen Kaufman, name partner of Los Angeles' Smith Kaufman and head of its political practice group, has become chief consultant to the House Democratic Caucus special committee on election reform.
"It is an honor to be given the opportunity to work with members of Congress to reform our nation's electoral process," Kaufman says.
Kaufman, 38, advises elected officials, candidates, corporations, unions and political action committees on local, state and federal campaign finance, election law, lobbying and conflict-of-interest issues.
"Election reform is an area where I feel my experience and expertise can really make an impact on our society," he says.
Although most of Kaufman's clients are based in California, including Los Angeles mayoral candidate Antonio Villaraigosa, he also worked as an attorney for the Gore-Lieberman recount team following the 2000 presidential elections.
The special committee is chaired by Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Los Angeles, who is also one of Kaufman's regular clients. The committee held two public meetings in April and is planning several more for the summer.
"I hope that, in some way, my contributions will lead to greater voter participation in future elections," Kaufman says.
