President George W. Bush plans to nominate Matt Fong as undersecretary of the Army, the White House has announced.
Fong, who served as California treasurer from 1995 to 1999, is special counsel to Los Angeles' Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton.
"I will try to do what is right for the men and women of uniform," Fong says.
Fong's nomination depends on an FBI background check and confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
Fong was an associate at Sheppard Mullin from 1985 to 1990 before following in the political footsteps of his mother, March Fong Eu, who served as California secretary of state from 1975 to 1994.
Fong served as vice chair of the state Board of Equalization before being elected state treasurer in 1995. He lost his 1998 bid for the U.S. Senate to incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer.
He returned to Sheppard Mullin as special counsel in 1999, all the while increasing his activity in national Republican politics.
Fong served as co-chair of California's Bush for President Campaign in 2000. After the election, he served on Bush's presidential transition team.
"I let the White House know that I wanted to use my talents somewhere within the Department of Defense, based on my set of skills," Fong says.
Fong is a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserve and has served as the chief for budget and congressional analysis for the Pentagon since last year.
