SAN FRANCISCO - Eight attorneys in Cooley Godward's technology transactions group will be transferred from the firm's San Francisco office to join 19 colleagues at firm headquarters in Palo Alto.
Robert Jones, Cooley's business department chairman, announced the move Thursday. He said he decided to consolidate the practice group in Palo Alto, where it serves a greater number and diversity of clients.
"It's a very competitive time in the marketplace," Jones said. The consolidation "lets us do a better job of servicing clients and creating opportunities for lawyers."
Cooley's technology transactions group combines the intellectual property and commercial transactions practice groups. The 40-attorney group assists technology clients in manufacturing and distribution agreements, product licensing and asset purchases.
The group's client list includes eBay Inc., Yahoo Inc., Adobe Systems Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc.
Cooley made heavy investments in creating the group with lateral hires. The group has proved to be a reliable moneymaker during the technology downturn because the practice area remains relatively immune to stock market fluctuations.
"Licensing is very stable work when the stock market is going up and down, like it is currently," Jones said.
He said clients in San Francisco also will benefit from the consolidation. The technology transactions group lawyers who live in San Francisco weren't exactly excited by the move, he acknowledged.
"Obviously it creates a commute problem for lawyers established in San Francisco," he said, declining to identify the attorneys being transferred.
Jones said the transfer would occur over the next few weeks.
