Richard A. Derevan, a partner at Irvine's Snell & Wilmer, recently became a member of the exclusive American Academy of Appellate Lawyers.
He becomes one of only 242 people in the country who belong to the association.
In his 25-year career, Derevan, 53, has served as lead counsel on more than 175 appeals and writ proceedings. He compares his work to solving math problems. Instead of numbers, he uses words to get the right answer for his client.
Due in large part to Derevan's advocacy, the state's highest court decided in February to withhold prejudgment interest in an auto accident case. Hess v. Ford Motor Co., 27 Cal.4th 516 (Cal. February 2002).
Derevan understands if trial lawyers don't recognize the joys of spending hours in the library.
"To a lot of people, this would be a very boring practice," Derevan says. "What appeals to me is the writing part of it."
