On Friday, May 17, 2002, eight minors from Camp David Gonzales went to visit the Daily Journal, located in downtown Los Angeles. At the Daily Journal, we saw and learned great things. For instance, we saw a newspaper being printed, how a press works and how each machine does a different job.
Our trip to the Daily Journal was coordinated by Katrina Dewey, the editor of the Daily Journal and our counselor Stephanie Saunders and approved by camp directors John Robbins and Gil Valleriano. What made the trip so exciting was the reporters who write for the newspaper and how they manage to give such a thorough report on their topic. We also can't forget about the wonderful pizza and sodas they had laid out on the table when we arrived in the newsroom. Managing Editor Martin Berg of the Daily Journal had a very interesting conversation with us eight minors.
The meeting Berg conducted was an editor's meeting, similar to the ones we have here at Camp David Gonzales. The editors went over all of the articles that were going to be in the next day's newspaper.
After the meeting, we wandered around the newsroom and held conversations with various reporters. We saw Melissa Anderson, who was in charge of the layout of the paper. Anderson designed the entire paper on a computer program called Quark. We also talked to photo editor Robbie Story and photographers Hugh Williams and Robert Levins.
All in all, our trip was one of a kind. The entire Behind the Wall editorial staff at Camp David Gonzales would like to make a special thank you to all those who made our experience possible. We also would like to give an extra special thank you to Saunders, our administrative assistant Gus Mojaro, probation officer Parrin Robinson and Dewey. We really enjoyed our excursion.
Demetrice D. and Benjamin C. are members of the editorial staff of Behind the Wall at Camp David Gonzales, a youth detention camp in Calabasas.
