LOS ANGELES - Valerie Salkin was 13 when a sniper shot her.
She was roller-skating with her younger brother one Sunday afternoon on an otherwise deserted playground in a quiet Westside neighborhood. When she looked down, her jeans were soaked in blood.
It was not a life-threatening injury, Salkin said, but the .22-caliber bullet that ripped through her left thigh, also pierced her sense of security.
