SAN LUIS OBISPO - The word on Judge John A. Trice, shortly after he took the Superior Court bench in 2002, was that his sentences were harsh.

"Since he's been on the bench, he has upped the standards of punishment," an attorney said in a 2003 profile of the judge, adding that his style required both deputy district attorneys and deputy public defenders to make adjustments.
