SAN DIEGO - Freddie G. was living in a refrigerator box behind a recycling plant when Francisco P. Marty Jr. met him. Freddie, a heroin addict, was in trouble. Again.

Marty, a San Diego County deputy public defender at the time, was assigned to represent him.

Freddie, who was in his late 30s and had been addicted to heroin for half his life, wanted to give Drug Court a try.
