LOS ANGELES - Rita Baird was an hour from the end of her night shift as head nurse of the pediatric unit at Olive View Medical Center in Sylmar on Feb. 9, 1971, when a 6.6-magnitude earthquake shook the building so hard it knocked her to the ground.
"I'm from New York," Baird said. "I didn't even know it was an earthquake. I thought the generator blew up."
