SAN DIEGO - Darlene White's daughter was 6 weeks old when White started law school. Her son was 9 months old when she took the State Bar Exam 2½ years later.

Bedtime stories sprang magically from textbooks.

"I read cases out loud to my kids when they were babies," she said, "just so they could hear my voice."
