LONG BEACH - Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Patrick T. Madden was 9 or 10 when his mother took him on his first deep-sea fishing trip.

It wasn't that his mom enjoyed the sport particularly, the judge said. But Phyllis Madden knew her youngest son would. "Fishing Flashes," a local television show, was one of his favorite programs.
