INDIO - Lawrence P. Best's legal career has taken a circuitous path. He worked as a deputy district attorney for 15 years before Riverside County's judges named him a commissioner in 1997. After hearing cases for a little over a year, he left and rejoined the prosecutor's office. Now he's back in the commissioner seat, presiding over a family law calendar.
