SAN JOSE — A young Nona L. Klippen learned about public service from exemplary teachers — her parents.

Her father, Rev. Leonard Klippen, is a retired Lutheran minister who marched in Albany, Georgia in 1962 to support desegregation. Her mother, Constance Klippen, was active in Jesuit organizations that sought to improve slum conditions.
