VISTA- Mariposa County prosecutor Robert J. Kearney practiced in a town so small that, when they ran out of potential jurors one day, the judge had to send the bailiff out to the local grocers and post office armed with subpoenas.

"One lady showed up with a bag of groceries and a bunch of kids in tow," said Kearney, now a Superior Court judge in Vista. "She was not happy."
