LOS ANGELES - As Judge Chester Horn scrolled through memories of past trials, he was not fishing for lawyers' names, or criminal defendants' faces, but retracing the dramatic arc of their cases.
There was the double murder of a pregnant woman and her fetus, and a tense, after-hours hold-up of an elderly store clerk who failed to steal a glance of the thief he'd later have to identify.
