LOS ANGELES - Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz is looking a bit askew at the defendant, decked out in a standard-issue blue prison jumpsuit.

Arrested after a fight, the defendant has one thing going for him: Schwartz feels a special respect and gratitude for him because he's a veteran. And so the judge places him in a Veterans Hospital program in Westwood that will put a roof over his head.
