VISTA - Judge Michael Kirkman was in elementary school when he made a promise to his grandfather, a San Joaquin Valley rancher.

"He made me promise I'd go to college," Kirkman said.

The old man, a decorated World War I vet, was "a tough, grizzled guy ... who loved things I loved - mostly baseball," the judge said.
