EL CAJON - Charles W. Ervin had a rather unusual perspective when he took the bench in 2000. For a decade, he served as a bailiff in San Diego County.

"I know how their jobs are supposed to be done," Ervin said, seated in his chambers. "They always worry that I might climb down off the bench at some point and assist them with a problem."
