RIVERSIDE - Michael B. Donner vividly remembers the day when, as a young man working in pipeline construction for the Southern California Gas Co., his boss ordered him to crawl into a hole "filled with nasty liquid" and feel the base of a steel rod boring deep into the ground to make sure it was traveling straight.
