SAN FRANCISCO - When San Francisco County Superior Court Judge Loretta M. Giorgi's cat Bullwinkle died last year, the public defenders and district attorneys assigned to her misdemeanor criminal courtroom bought her an orchid.

When an assistant public defender was transferred to another courtroom, the district attorneys got permission from Giorgi to throw her a going away party.
