SALINAS - Baby-faced in his orange- and white-striped, jail-issue jumpsuit, Alexis Aguilar awaited sentencing for murder on a recent Thursday in Judge Timothy Roberts' courtroom.

Before he learned his fate, however, the 19-year-old gang member got to make one last statement. He stood before Roberts and read from a note to the packed courtroom.
