MERCED - To the greater population of Merced County, Superior Court Judge Carol K. Ash might seem strict on sentencing.

In 2008, she delivered the longest sentence in county history to a convicted child molester. Ignacio Vargas, then 40, received 88 years, plus 500 years to life, for molesting a girl over a three-year period starting when she was 8.
