Since childhood, Judge Barbara A. Buchholz has cut her own path.

When her family moved from Arizona during her senior year of high school, Buchholz didn't want to leave. So she found a friend to live with and stayed behind.

"I had an independent streak, that's what my parents would tell you," she said.
