LOS ANGELES - Don Miles was 3 when he went on his first duck-hunting trip, 5 when his dad gave him a single-shot rifle and 9 when he got a hunting license.

Firearm safety was his dad's highest priority.

"He used to say, 'Telling a person that you're sorry doesn't mean much to them when they're dead,'" Miles said.
