MURRIETA - Judge Mark A. Mandio sees himself as the "air-traffic controller" of his courthouse.

That's because, as the master calendar judge at Riverside County's Southwest Justice Center, Mandio said he's responsible for keeping criminal cases that are nearing trial in a "holding pattern" until a trial judge has docket space for them. He also hears pre-trial motions on the cases.
