JACKSON — Renee C. Day was sitting on a balcony overlooking the Nile River when the call came.

On the other end was Josh Groban, Gov. Jerry Brown’s judicial appointments secretary, telling her she was being appointed as an Amador County Superior Court judge.

The late 2015 call ended what had been a kind of informal bet between Day and Amador County Presiding Judge J.S. Hermanson.
