In 2016 the city of Oakland paid close attention to a bankruptcy case to determine the fate of a notoriously blighted downtown residential hotel building known as Empyrean Towers.
After the city attorney sued her for operating the property as a public nuisance, the building owner forfeited the towers after declaring bankruptcy.
