VISTA - Bill Wood was in his late 30s when he left the San Diego district attorney's office to become a U.S. Foreign Service officer.

Armed with a love of overseas travel and just enough familiarity with Mandarin to "croak out visa interviews," Wood left with his wife, Whitney, in 1999 for Taiwan, their two young children in tow. A year later, they returned to San Diego.
